NOVEL Circulade ANN BONE In a medieval
village in south-western France, in the last year of the twentieth century, three
lives interweave. Stephen is a young teacher aiming to conquer his English
inhibitions; Sabine is a warm and spirited local with an unlikely lover; and
Rem is trapped by his links with a terrorist network. Their paths
increasingly cross, as they are bound to do in one small village. Carried by
the current of the story is the ‘body in the river’. Seen by Stephen below
the Devil’s Bridge on his arrival, the loglike shape is interpreted
differently as experiences unfold: as a Freudian death wish; as a Jungian
prediction; as a Marxist non-fact; and, underlying them all, as a figure from
the myth of the Grotte de Clamouse, the caves above the village. In the last
scenes, as the year ends and the journeys of Stephen, Sabine and Rem are
resolved, the body – or, at any rate, a body – is finally identified.
